Chongli finished with Switzerland taking the first four places in Sunday's Men Elite final and just 11 points separating the top two women in the series. The World Cup now heads to Sarasota BMX, Florida, for rounds nine and ten on October 31 and November 1.
Sunday's big finish. Cédric Butti won round eight ahead of Mark Lüthi, Filib Steiner and Tristan Borel. Laura Smulders took Women Elite, with Bethany Shriever second and Teya Rufus third. Smulders leaves China on 2,861 points; Shriever has 2,850. That is the tightest lead across the four classes.
Saturday's winners. Joshua Jolly won Men Elite in round seven, adding another victory after his breakthrough at Mentougou. Shriever won Women Elite. Both Chongli rounds took place on their scheduled dates, October 10 and 11.
Two days, two doubles. Pierre Geisse won both Men Under 23 rounds, with Clément Rocherieux second each day. Freia Challis swept Women Under 23, ahead of American Derin Merten in both finals. Tommy Bruney gave the U.S. another podium with third on Saturday, then finished eighth on Sunday.
The U.S. weekend. In Men Elite, Drew Polk placed 26th and 41st; Jeremy Smith 59th and 42nd; Cameron Bramer 63rd both days; and Kamren Larsen 64th and 60th. In Women Elite, Payton Ridenour finished 15th and 11th, Mckenzie Gayheart 28th and 22nd, and Carly Kane 36th and 33rd. The other U.S. Men Under 23 finishes were Deegan Brown's 11th and 15th and Sean Day's 23rd and 21st. All pairs list Saturday first.
The road to Sarasota. Jaymio Brink leads Men Elite with 2,095 points, ahead of Arthur Pilard on 1,677 and Loris Aeberhard on 1,581. Cameron Wood, who did not race Chongli, is eighth on 1,331. Behind Smulders and Shriever, Molly Simpson holds third in Women Elite on 2,536.
Rocherieux leads Men Under 23 with 1,067 points; Mathis Jacquet has 793 and Geisse 669. Bruney sits fourth on 550. Challis leads Women Under 23 with 1,004, followed by Isabella Schramm on 700 and Lily Greenough on 645. Merten is sixth on 463.
For BMX families following the American riders, Sarasota brings that chase onto home soil. Keep an eye on the two women at the top: Smulders and Shriever each won in Chongli, and they arrive at the last weekend almost level.
